Funding is paid periodically between traders to synchronize the price of a perpetuals contract with the underlying asset's spot price. The funding rate is the percentage fee paid between traders, typically quoted and settled on an 8-hourly basis.
If the funding rate is positive, longs pay shorts. If the funding rate is negative, shorts pay longs.
Funding rates are calculated based on the difference in the price of the underlying asset between the perpetuals contract and the spot market. The exact formula used depends on the exchange and the specific contract, but it generally involves the premium or discount between the two prices and the time remaining until the next funding payment.
The default funding rate when there is no premium or discount is 0.01% every 8 hours, or 10.95% annually. This is sometimes referred to as the interest rate and represents the cost to borrow capital.
